3M’s 6658 stretch release double sided tape enables the versatility of high strength bonding yet the possibility of de-bonding when required. This bond separation feature is made possible by the high tensile dead stretch properties of the film carrier. The benefit offered to designers of box assembly/enclosures of devices is no surface damage to the bonded substrates in the event of disassembly.
As some electronic device components of significant value may require repair, they need to be disassembled from housings, repaired and subsequently re-assembled. By working with a converter partner, such as Parafix, who die-cuts the tape to custom dimensions, a pull-tab can also be incorporated by design in the assembled part. When the pull-tab is pulled and stretched with a sustained force in the X-axis, the film carrier distorts/shrinks in width, thereby destroying the bond line between the substrates.
This is contrary to the usual method of using excessive force to pry open the bond line, which usually causes undue trauma to the substrates, causing surface damage, sometimes even structural damage in serious cases.
Combined with Parafix’s capability, these products can be supplied in slit rolls, sheets or die-cut form.
