A round up of the league from Singing Hill’s Paul Gibbons
As in any sport, they say if you are going to win the league, you must win your home matches and after a flying start back in October 2014 with a home win 4-1 against Hassocks the unthinkable happened, a disappointing home defeat to Mid Sussex, which makes the winning of the Parafix league all the more satisfying. The team then bounced back to defeat Lindfield 4.5 to 0.5 and finish 2014 on a high.
Poor weather played its part as it’s apt to do in the “Winter” League and after a number of cancellations we started the 2015 campaign with an away fixture to Hassocks and despite hard working performances from all the side the home team proved too strong, a combination of very good play from them and greens that proved very difficult to negotiate. However from this point on the momentum behind the Singing Hills side just built and built. Next up were Chichester away and we had a great “half”, but for a few missed putts, it could and probably should have been our first away victory.
Our match at Lindfield is always looked forward to for the great breakfast, as much as anything, and what a performance from the Singing Hills team, all the matches going down to the last hole and with the matches tied 2-2 the tension was evident with Alex Wilson and Barry Sowton having a putt to give us our first away victory. Barry calmly stepped up and holed the winning putt to the cheers of all on the Singing Hills side.
More memorable still, the day belonged to Nick Gray who had a hole in one on the 2nd hole, unfortunately we found his tee shot in the hole of the 7th green!
We then went to Mid Sussex to try and avenge our home defeat and Neil Morrells chip in on the last to win his match sealed a famous away 2-3 victory.
Our final match was at home to Chichester with three teams still able to win the Winter league depending on the outcome of the final match of the season. With the course in fantastic condition and Chichester full of praise for our course, our motivated team recorded a 3-2 win and lift the Winter League title for the first time in Singing Hills history. We have a great team of players and fantastic team spirit with the golf played competitively but always with smiles on our faces! Thanks go to Mike Punter and Parafix for their long standing sponsorship of the Winter League.
