Joining and sealing o-ring substitute solution for antenna casing in external environment
Our customer required a more manufacturing-friendly 0-ring substitute component to seal a microwave broadband antenna casing. The component was to replace the existing large o-ring that was awkward and time consuming to apply; the aim being to improve their assembly process without loss of performance.
We developed and prototyped the component using a neoprene foam material laminated with a double sided adhesive tape, die-cut and presented in the required format, for reliable bonding and sealing and ease of application.

- Part must withstand IP67 (dust and water international protection rating)
- Part must be conformable for sealing purposes, but not crushing so not to breach IP67
- Part must withstand harsh environments
- Part must be easy to handle for assembly
Our solutionOur solution- We specified a closed cell foam and 3M adhesive tape 9088, which we laminated onto both sides of the foam. Both materials were suitable for extreme environmental conditions
- Based on customer drawings, we provided several rounds of samples to support environmental testing
- Final production parts were supplied as single pieces, with easy peel tabs to aid application
