Development of o-ring substitute in Antenna Casing
Joining and sealing o-ring substitute solution for antenna casing in external environment
Our customer required a more manufacturing-friendly 0-ring substitute component to seal a microwave broadband antenna casing. The component was to replace the existing large o-ring that was awkward and time consuming to apply; the aim being to improve their assembly process without loss of performance.
We developed and prototyped the component using a neoprene foam material laminated with a double sided adhesive tape, die-cut and presented in the required format, for reliable bonding and sealing and ease of application.
We specified a closed cell foam and 3M adhesive tape 9088, which we laminated onto both sides of the foam. Both materials were suitable for extreme environmental conditions
Based on customer drawings, we provided several rounds of samples to support environmental testing
Final production parts were supplied as single pieces, with easy peel tabs to aid application
